Sierra Wireless and TELUS Mobility Announce
the Availability of High-Speed Wireless PC Cards Across Canada
AirCard® 555 Wireless Network Card
Connects Mobile Users on TELUS Mobility's New National 1X Network
Vancouver, British Columbia - June
3, 2002 - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSE: SW) announced
today the commercial availability of the AirCard® 555 as part
of TELUS Mobility's Velocity Wireless service now operating on the
new TELUS Mobility CDMA2000 1X network. When inserted into a laptop
or handheld device, the AirCard 555 wireless network card allows
mobile users to work as if they never left the office with fast,
always-on access to the Internet, e-mail, and other personal or
corporate information, in addition to sending and receiving voice
calls. TELUS Mobility clients can now experience a faster wireless
connection and higher performance WAN (wide area network) solution
on the new TELUS Mobility 1X network along with the Sierra Wireless
AirCard 555.
TELUS Mobility's new network is the first to offer 1X service in
major urban centers across Canada. The company will continue to
expand its 1X service to smaller population centres and rural communities,
and to the United States through a roaming agreement with partner
Verizon, later in 2002.
"The launch of our new, national 1X network has opened the
door for data products like the AirCard 555, one of the most innovative
wireless products on the market today," said Robert Blumenthal,
Vice President of Products and Services for TELUS Mobility. "Our
clients can now design their own wireless workplace with quick and
reliable access to information, providing a convenient computing
solution to mobile professionals who need to stay connected anywhere,
anytime."
The AirCard 555 wireless network card is the first dual band CDMA2000
1X PC card in North America. It has been recognized for numerous
awards including a Best of Show award at Fall Internet World and
most recently an Editor's Choice award by PC Magazine, for its attention
to high-speed wireless voice and data access and low power consumption.
The AirCard 555 will also enable users to add voice and short messaging
service capabilities to their laptops, PDAs, and other computing
devices while experiencing superior power management.
"Sierra Wireless and TELUS Mobility continue their long-standing
partnership to deliver cutting edge wireless solutions to mobile
users that demand real time access to information," said Jason
Cohenour, Senior Vice President Distribution. "Designed for
users in the field or on the road, the AirCard 555 combined with
the services offered by TELUS Mobility will provide wireless freedom
and mobility with high-speed connectivity. As the need for high
performance wireless products continues to grow, we remain committed
to delivering solutions that will ensure Canadian mobile users have
all the necessary tools that will enable them to stay connected
in a growing mobile world."
The AirCard 555 offers reliable mobile wireless connectivity on
the TELUS Mobility network at data speeds between 40-60 kbps, which
is comparable to what PC users get when using a dial-up Internet
service, and up to 144 kbps in optimal conditions. The unique dual
band design (800MHz Cellular and 1900MHz PCS band operation) also
offers maximum coverage and access to the entire TELUS Mobility
CDMA networks, including existing IS95A networks, and the new CDMA2000
1X high-speed network - ensuring a reliable wireless connection
while on the road or away from the office. For more information
