Telus Mobility Launches High-Speed Wireless
with Velocity Wireless
TELUS Mobility has taken the next generation of wireless nationwide
with today's launch of our 1X network in major cities across Canada,
cool new 1X products and an ambitious plan to serve the high-value
corporate market with complete mobile computing solutions.
1X offers clients a dramatic increase in wireless Internet access
speeds compared with current PCS browsing options. Ours is Canada's
first national 1X network and the only one in Western Canada, and
we plan to expand service across our full digital footprint and
into the US over the next year (please see today's press release
on Clarity and Mobilityworld for details).
Right now, our competitors offer either regional 1X service or
products based on the older GPRS (general packet radio service)
technology, which doesn't boast the speed and other network advantages
of 1X. None of those competitors can match our future friendly set
of next generation products nor the comprehensive structure we've
built to support the corporate market.
Velocity Wireless
Our first 1X product is Velocity Wireless, a mobile computing solution
in a box. Coupled with a portable PC or PDA, the Velocity Wireless
kit contains everything clients need to get up and running with
fast mobile Internet access, including a wireless AirCard and online
services such as e-mail addresses and Web storage space.
Note that Velocity Wireless shouldn't be confused with Velocity
DSL, the high-speed desktop Internet service offered by TELUS Corp.
in Western Canada. While Velocity Wireless does offer slower Internet
access speeds than hardwired DSL, it offers the inherently valuable
benefit of mobility you can use it wherever you might be
in our national 1X service area.
Targeting Corporate Clients
While the target markets for Velocity Wireless and our other 1X
mobile computing products are broad, we're focusing quite closely
on corporate clients. We've forged alliances with brand-name IT
solutions providers such as Citrix and Hewlett-Packard,
Pacific CoastCom is one of our most knowledgable dealers
to introduce and capture this new market.
1X is a major step in our move to a full Third Generation (3G)
wireless network, which over the next few years will allow us to
offer Internet access speeds fast enough to support a wealth of
new multimedia applications, such as video streaming and location-based
services.
